Untreed Reads is proud to present SPACE 1889 & BEYOND, a brand-new series of books based on the award-winning steampunk role-playing game created by Frank Chadwick. A universe in which Victorian science has breached the barrier of Earth's atmosphere and is spreading out among the stars.

Journey to the Heart of Luna

The year is 1889, and mankind is out among the stars.

For almost three decades man has explored the Inner Planets, but still they seem to be very uninterested in what’s on their doorstep. Namely, the Earth’s moon – Luna! Two men, however, have shown unprecedented interest in Luna; crazed Russian scientist, Vladimir Tereshkov, and American inventor Doctor Cyrus Grant. Problem is, both men have gone missing.

A distress call is received from Luna, sent by Dr Grant’s niece, Miss Annabelle Somerset. The British Government has been waiting for an excuse to mount a mission to Luna, to investigate the Russian interest in that rock, and so they launch the new aether battleship, HMAS Sovereign, and enlist the assistance of scientist Nathanial Stone, friend and ex-colleague of Dr Grant.

Reluctantly Stone agrees; but the mission presents him with many more challenges than he could ever have expected. What truth is there to the rumours of the moon men, the supposed natives of Luna, and what is the secret of the ‘glow’? Answers to these and many other questions can only be found by journeying to the heart of Luna itself...

Journey to the Heart of Luna Space 1889 Beyond Book 1 eBook Andy FrankhamAllen

Journey to the Heart of Luna jumped out at me as I was searching for some original steampunk work. I did not realize at first that it was based on a RPG from years past, but it did not matter. The Heart of Luna is a great start to the series, with excellent characterizations, romantic undertones, suspense, danger, action and excitement. I finished it with the immediate desire to find more. Pleasantly I was not disappointed.

This is an excellent 'novella' and well worth the price. The devices, the aether, the ships are all lovingly described and pivotal to the story as well.

Journey to the Heart of Luna Space 1889 Beyond Book 1 eBook Andy FrankhamAllen Reviews

Great to see Space 1889 going live again after so long. This was a good rip roaring adventure once it got going. There was a little too much background in the beginning I think and not enough urgency as to the situation. Overall a good story with one major plot flaw. The Royal Navy Captain leaves his away team with 1 hour of air and no support for a non-emergency event. Then he doesn't go back to rescue them in time, again without any threat to the main vessel (he has cutters he could have sent back or left so really kind of an issue in the plot kind of a court martial offense). The plot overall does work even with that, but maybe there was a little too much coincidence in the timing of things. Overall a pretty good read and a nice introduction to the main characters.
I enjoy reading about the fantastic world of "Space 1889," so I picked up this book. I decided to give it 3 stars because it was so cheap, but it really borders on 2.

The captain of the ship makes illogical decisions and abandons his ground crew without need and with only 1 hour of air. In a not-entirely-unexpected twist they find air after all. Characters are introduced and taken away, leaving a feeling of having only been introduced so that we care about them at all. One goes missing without any real explanation. Russian terms are used without introduction, and it generally seems like the reader (of the first book in the first series!) somehow knows enough about the world to figure it out for him- or herself. Etc.

The villain and henchmen leave something to be desired. The English seem to fight the Russians mostly because they're Russians, and a race of insect men finds immediate acceptance despite their alienness. On the good side, the Russians of the first episode may not be described very much, but at least they seem not so much like moustache-twirling silent movie villains in black cloaks as the German commander in the second novel does.

It is an okay read, but even regarding books that are set in some game world, I've read way better ones - the BattleTech and DragonLance novels come to mind.
"A Fun Beginning For A Great New Series!"

"A Journey To The Heart of Luna" by Andy Frankham-Allen is the first entry in the steampunk series, SPACE 1889, in which steam engines have given mankind the ability of spaceflight in the 1800s. When the British government receives a distress call from a young adventuress, Annabelle Somerset, from the moon, they decide to investigate. Her uncle's friend, Nathaniel Stone, an inventor, is requested to join the expedition.

Well written with good characterization, but the story moved a bit slow. Most likely due to the need of setting up the series for future adventures. Readers of fast paced action will undoubtedly find this one boring, as it needs to be absorbed at a slower pace to familiarize the reader with the many interesting characters. It works well as a series opener, and the second story, "Vandals On Venus", in the new ebook series picks up steam with a bang. I highly recommend these adventures of Professor Nathaniel Stone and Annabelle Somerset.
I am a Space 1889 fan, and have admired those who have struggled to keep the gamesystem and mythos alive. It is not easy to do so when this steampunk based roleplaying system was not the most popular, nor is this view of a Steampunk society the most accepted.

Frankham-Allen tries and unfortunately in my estimation, fails. Perhaps because he does not focus on the matters he places in front of us. Perhaps because he decides as the writer-god, that some areas of his physics applies to his heroes and some areas do not. Perhaps because the way he takes his protagonists from frying pan to fire is too far-fetched, or perhaps because his Star Trek like away time is abandoned and not supported to meet their fate yet somehow can decide within the British System to walk about the Moon finding air on an airless planet and live, when all others would say this was certain death.

A may have a different view of how these books should have had foundation in the 1889 universe, since we have other documentation that tells us what this is supposed to be. Frankhan-Allen should have used those as well as some understanding of the british navy to build his work. I want to read more about this universe yet I do not believe that I have been convinced to do so. Average at best.
Seemed to have a bit of back and forth between 2 groups and wasn't as meaty as I hoped for Space 1889.
Still, I'm looking forward to the next in the series which seems to be promising.
First off, I want to say that I love the universe. I love the mythos. I love the groundbreaking for the steampunk genre that this wild and woolly setting this book owes its tradition to. What I didn't like was the book.

The characters were less homages than caricatures of Victorian manners with motivations that were so baffling that I actively began to detest the protagonists and root for the equally caricaturized 'evil Russians'.

All that being said, I'll probably give this universe another try...but with another author.
I found the Heart of Luna to be a masterful tale of the Space 1889 universe. Most of the characters were well developed and real. The story held together well with good visual pictures. My only gripe was the inevitability of the action (for the most part) and the number of loose ends left at the end.
